SVP Tokyo Supports Citizen-Led Efforts to Recover from the Earthquakes and Tsunamis
We thank each one of you from our entire hearts for all your support to and participation in SVP Tokyo.
The earthquakes and tsunamis that hit Japan on and after March 11th have caused devastating damage in vast areas.
Although the damage is overwhelming, we, SVP Tokyo, believe in the potential value that the communities and people in the plagued area have. In fact, many people have taken initiative in relief and rebuild activities as well as the efforts by the public and private sectors.
SVP Tokyo has invested in capacity building to support innovative social entrepreneurs since 2003. By tapping into our experience and network inside and outside of Japan, we support the citizen-led approaches that are taking/will take leading roles in the relief and rebuild efforts.
As for financial support, SVP network in North America has raised more than 29,000 U.S. dollars from individual Partners and citizens since the earthquake. In addition, SVP Tokyo Partners, alumni Partners, and other individuals in Japan have made contributions as well. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to you for your generous and considerate contributions. In addition to the funding, many Partners are providing their skills and time to strengthen organizational capacity of rebuild-related projects.
The donations we received by June 10th will be channeled into the following three organizations, which conduct various activities, leveraging their expertise and network. (Amount of allocation will be determined based on the needs of each organization and project.)
ETIC: “Disaster Recovery Leadership Development” Project
ETIC, which has worked to develop young social entrepreneurs in Japan, has a close, collaborative relationship and a shared sense of goal with SVP Tokyo. After the earthquake, ETIC launched “Disaster Recovery Leadership Development” project to support and develop young leaders who are leading/will lead reconstruction from disaster.
Donations through SVP Tokyo will be used to support young leaders working in the affected area and to strengthen organizational capacity of the project.
Tokyo Midwife Association: “Welcome to Your Tokyo Home”Project
Ms. Shoko So, a SVP Tokyo Partner and an executive director at Tokyo Midwife Association, launched “Welcome to Your Tokyo Home” project, which provides expectant mothers in the affected area with safe and comfortable shelters in Tokyo and necessary support.
Donations through SVP will be used to provide accommodation and non-insured care.
Carepro: Medical Checkup Service
Carepro, one of our current Investees, is conducting medical checkups for those affected by the disaster.
Donations through SVP Tokyo will be used to strengthen the management and develop the project through covering the personnel costs of nurses and the cost of testing apparatus.
We continue to accept donations until July 20. The recipients of the contributions received between June 10th and July 11th will be selected from the organizations that SVP Tokyo is working with. We will keep you updated on our website.
We have a long way to go. More than 98,000 evacuees are not able to return home yet and the number of people confirmed dead or listed as missing reached more than 23,000 (as of June 5th).
What we need is sustainable and persevering efforts.
Your support is greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much,
Social Venture Partners Tokyo
